Paris' famous gothic cathedral is located on the Ile de la Cité, the heart of medieval Paris. Construction began in the late 12th century and the cathedral was in constant change for centuries to come. It embodies the soul of Paris and has inspired many artists, perhaps most famously Victor Hugo in his great novel, Notre-Dame de Paris.
